The Power Animals and Totems in Shamanism
The distinguishing feature of shamanism is its focus on an ecstatic trance state. In which the soul of the shaman leaves the body and ascends to heaven or descends to earth (underground world). The shaman, in shamanism, makes use of spiritual helpers, with whom he-she communicates at all times maintaining control over his-her own conscience.
There are many variants of shamanism in the world. The following are the beliefs shared by all forms of shamanism. It is necessary to clarify that shamanism comes from the word “shaman”, typical of the eastern region of Siberia. Although, as Mircea Eliade points out in his attempt to make a general history of shamanism, there are a diversity of shamans around the world. They are characterized by being healers and spiritual guides who travel for different dimensions.
The ability to consciously go beyond the physical body is the traditional specialty of the shaman. These Soul journeys can take the shaman to the lower realms or higher levels of existence or to parallel physical worlds or other regions of this world. For all cases, the presence of the guide and protection of the animals of power is very important.
Animals of power are spirit guides in animal form. When they are not helping their assigned person, they are in the nether world.
Even if someone never travels in shamanic reality, that person still have one or more animals of power assigned to him-her and it can only work their healing and protection function when the person eventually connects with these power realms.
Other cultures believe that when a child is born, a benevolent spirit in the form of an animal looks at the infant and sees how helpless he-she is. This spirit takes pity on the child and becomes his-her ally and protector.
Often a person’s animal of power is an animal for which they have a strong affinity. For example, if someone collects figures of bears or horses, one of them is likely his-her animal of power.
In ordinary consciousness reality, an animal of power is a source of protection and power. It is the job of the animal to be able to make sure that the inconsiderate person who is driving fast does not hit his-her vehicle and that, if a rock falls from the sky, it falls into the person’s side and not on him-her.
They work for our good, to keep the physical world safe and positive for us.
A loss or absence of an animal of power can lead to many abnormalities, from apathy and being prone to accidents, to chronic illness.
A strong connection with an animal of power provides a source of energy and support and enhances the flow of your own energy.
If you go on the shamanic journey, additional animals of power will come to you (explained in this course). In addition to their specific functions, we can turn to animals of power to feel safe in shamanic reality, wherever our travels take us.
They guide us where we need to go, show us what we need to know, and generally help and support us on any journey we undertake.
For complicated tasks such as soul rescue therapies (when we become healing shamanic facilitators), our animals of power join our spiritual guides and work together to guide and help us.
